Montevallo and Vincent faced off Thursday in one of the county’s oldest rivalries, each team wanting bragging rights and a chance to end the season on a high note.

Through close through the first half, Bulldog quarterback Kevin Callender stomped out the win, 40-22.

“I’m just happy for the seniors,” said Montevallo head coach Jim King. “The last time they stepped off the field, they were winners.”

Montevallo (5-5, 2-5) started the season 4-1 before losing four consecutive games.

“We started the season on such a high, but it turned so quick,” King said.

Vincent (5-5, 3-4) started strong too. The Yellow Jackets had a 5-1 record on Oct. 1 but have lost five straight games since then.

“We knew those last four [region games] would be the hardest,” said Vincent head coach Dwight Spradley. “But we never had a problem with effort. We might be short on the numbers, but we weren’t on heart.”

Vincent drew first blood Friday, with a 2-yard scamper by quarterback Corey Deloach. A successful 2-point conversion put the Yellow Jackets on top, 8-0.

Montevallo quickly answered off a 25-yard touchdown pass from Kevin Callender to R.J. Scaife.

The Yellow Jackets would retake the lead 29 seconds later though with a 19-yard pass from Deloach to Keyon Wallace.

Montevallo dominated the second quarter, scoring off a 6-yard run by Toney Kent and a 22-yard field goal by Gilberto Fernandez.

The Bulldogs lead 19-14 at halftime.

But Vincent fought back, going back on top after a 3-yard run by Deloach, 2-22.

The lead would be the last of the night for Vincent. The Bulldogs gathered three more touchdowns from running back Drew Harris.

On the night, Montevallo had 494 yards compared to just 221 for Vincent.

Callender was 11-of-16 for 183 yards and one touchdown. The star player also had a game-high 154 yards rushing and recovered an interception on defense.

Deloach finished 8-for-15 with 112 yards and one touchdown. Juwan Rogers lead Vincent with 101 yards on the ground, while Brett Frizzell had 78 yards receiving.
