Madonna once sang that “music makes the people come together,” and a University of Montevallo group couldn’t agree more with the pop icon.

The UM chapter of the Collegiate Music Educators National Conference will host its third annual “Music Matters in Montevallo” festival Saturday, Nov. 1 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Orr Park. Admission is free.

Dr. Gary Packwood, a UM music professor, said the festival targets pre-K through eighth grade students. Festivities include face painting, raffle drawings, pumpkin carving, moonbouncing and music, naturally.

UM’s gospel choir and woodwind quartet are scheduled to perform, as well as the Montevallo High School Choir. In addition, young attendees can visit the “Instrumental Petting Zoo,” where they can try their hand at playing different instruments.

Food and game sales from the festival will go towards MHS’ choral department. Last year, the festival raised $600 for local music education programs. Packwood said this year’s games cost as little as 25 cents.

“We’ve gotten a lot of community support and we’re hoping for as many people as possible,” Packwood said.
