Part of Highway 119 shut down

Part of Highway 119 in Indian Springs Village, between Caldwell Mill Road and Interstate 65, is currently shut down because of a natural gas leak at Indian Springs Baptist Church, according to the Shelby County Emergency Management Agency.

EMA Director Don Greene said the gas leak erupted when contractors digging at the church hit a natural gas pipeline.

The church was voluntarily evacuated and no one was hurt, Greene said.

Alagasco is on the scene attempting to fix the pipeline, which could take anywhere from 30 minutes to several hours. The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office and the North Shelby Fire Department are also there.

Although there are detours for motorists to follow, Greene said the EMA’s biggest concern is with school buses picking up students from schools along that route.

He said the EMA is in contact with the Shelby County School Board about the issue.

More details will be released as they become available.
