Three Thompson turnovers resulted in three Northridge touchdowns, as the Jaguars were able to overcome a one-point halftime deficit to take the regular-season finale victory over the Warriors, 34-20.

“We made some plays, then we had some turnovers,” Thompson head coach Brian Maner said. “When you have turnovers, it leads to points for the other team.”

Thompson finishes the season 3-7 overall, 2-5 in Class 6A, Region 6.

Although the Warriors struggled and missed the playoffs for the second-consecutive season, Maner hopes his kids took away something from the good and the bad this year.

“I hope they learned some life lessons,” Maner said. “Everything is not going to go your way. Just keep plugging.”

The Warriors forced the Jaguars to punt on the opening series, but a Thompson fumble on the ensuing possession led to a 32-yard touchdown run by Malcolm Johnson to put the Jags up 6-0 followed a blocked extra-point kick by Thompson’s William Joseph.

The Warrior offense went right to work, answering with a 5-yard run by junior quarterback David Bria. The Warriors took the lead with the extra-point kick, but the Jags answered in just over a minute when Jimbo Whilhite hit Michael Bryant on a 36-yard double-reverse pass. The two-point conversion failed, leaving the score 12-7.

On the ensuing Thompson possession, an inadvertent whistle was overlooked, resulting in a turnover against the Warriors. As Bria was being brought to the ground, the ball was knocked loose, but a sideline official blew his whistle. The play was ruled a fumble, and the Jags went right back to work.

John Ikard connected with Johnson for his second touchdown with just under 2 minutes remaining to increase the lead to 19-7.

In the second quarter, it was all Thompson. After a missed Jags field goal, Monterious Drake rumbled 78 yards for the Thompson score to cut the lead to 19-14. The Warriors held the Jags on fourth down on the next possession, and Drake went right back to work, scoring a 2-yard run set up by a 38-yard pass from Bria to Jordan Chism. The Jags had one more drive in the half, but Trace Hocutt’s interception return ended the Northridge scoring threat.

The second half, however, was all Jags. Ikard added two more touchdown passes in the third quarter to close out the scoring.

Offensively for the Warriors, Drake had 172 yards on 20 carries, including 102 yards on eight carries in the first half. Bria, who was limited to the first half due to a reoccurring injury, was 8-of-12 for 113 yards and one rushing touchdown.

Chism finished with 74 yards on three receptions.
