Three commission seats up for grabs

Though the presidential race between John McCain and Barack Obama has trumped most local races around the water cooler, there are three Shelby County Commission seats up for grabs Tuesday.

Two Democratic women are challenging Republican incumbents.

In District 6, Larry Dillard is seeking a fifth-term against Cynthia “Cindy” Bell.

In District 9, Robbie Hayes is going after his first elected term against Carolyn Shields. Gov. Riley appointed Hayes to the commission in 2005. If Shields wins, she would be the only black on the all-white commission.

In District 8, Republican Rick Shepherd faces Terry Reagin, an independent. There is no Democratic challenger for the District 8 seat.
