Two decade–old festival funds ministry

A big country breakfast drew large numbers to the annual Fall Festival, sponsored by the Women’s Ministry of the Chelsea Church of God.

The festival was especially successful this year, said ministry president Linda Wilkins.

“We served breakfast to over 100 people, and the gift baskets, too, were especially successful,” Wilkins said. “And this year, we included children’s activities: face painting and bounces for them to jump in.”

The festival has been an annual event for more than 20 years, said church member Linda Brasher. Everyone works on it.

People of all ages helped organize, set up and clean up, manned booths and donated gift baskets, door prizes, bake goods and yard sale items.

Claudette Salser, with help from her daughter and son-in-law Janice and Shane Epperson, cooked the breakfast, which included tomato gravy and biscuits.

Businesses and individuals donated more than 20 door prizes. Sarah Weldon put together her annual goodie basket of homemade jellies, peppers, breads and her favorite recipes. For each $10 purchase at the festival, the buyer’s name was entered in a drawing for the basket.

The event is the main fund-raiser for the Women’s Ministry, Brasher said. Proceeds go to missions and for various ministries in the church.

“We help fund our children and youth ministries,” Brasher said. “And we put new flooring in our old parsonage.”

Wilkins said the women’s ministry group is looking forward to doing more as outreach to women.

“We feel the Lord is really working with women today, and we want to minister to them,” she said. “We’re a part of the body of Christ here. Not just a denomination. Anyone who needs prayer or help may call the church and it will be our privilege to pray for them and to help however we can.”

Proceeds will also help fund the ministry’s annual Community Women’s Conference to be held Jan. 16-17 with guest speaker Pam Hanes.
