Falcons lose hoops opener in final seconds, 77-75

John Vaudreuil converted a 3-point play with 7.7 seconds remaining to lift the University of Minnesota-Duluth (1-0) to a 77-75 victory over the University of Montevallo (0-1) on opening night at the Disney Tip-Off Classic Friday. Junior Nate Flowers led UM with a double-double, a team-high 17 points and game-high 13 rebounds. Junior Freddy Little added 15 points while classmate Marcus Lancaster scored 12 points.

Little went 3-for-5 from beyond the 3-point arc while Lancaster was 4-for-6 from the field. Lancaster also dished out a team-high six assists in the contest.

The Falcons shot 46 percent from the floor and were 13-for-18 at the free throw line.

The game was tied at 41 at halftime but UMD used a second half push to take the two point lead with seven seconds remaining. The Falcons were unable to convert on their own play to tie the game.

The Falcons will return to action Saturday, Nov. 8 at 6:30 p.m. as they take on No. 2 Florida Southern.
