Second-ranked University of West Florida avenged last year’s Gulf South Conference championship upset by blanking the University of Montevallo, 3-0, Sunday in Pensacola, Fla.

The Argonauts struck quickly when Dernelle Mascall collected a pass from Shaneka Gordon in front of the box and buried it past UM goalkeeper Corey Gros in the 10th minute.

Gordon went on to score two unassisted goals in the match in the 21st and 47th minutes to secure the GSC women’s soccer title.

Montevallo was completely shut out in the first half, as the Argos defense allowed no shots by the Falcons. Kami Kapaku broke the drought 32 seconds out of halftime, but the shot was collected by West Florida keeper Courtney Jones. It was the only shot Jones had to defend in the match. Kapaku managed to fire off UM’s only other shot in the 52nd minute, but it missed wide left.

Montevallo defeated West Florida, 2-1, to win its first GSC women’s soccer title last November.

UWF (20-0-1) advances to the NCAA Division II regional, while UM ends its season with an 11-6-3 record.
