Former Auburn University running back Lionel “Little Train” James pleaded guilty to two of three DUI charges on Nov. 14.

James’ was arrested and transported to the Shelby County Jail on Nov. 9, when authorities pulled him over on U.S. 280 at 10:30 p.m. The 46-year-old had incurred two previous DUI charges in July and October.

James received a 12-month sentence, which would be reduced to 60 days upon his successful completion of treatment. James was scheduled to enter a treatment facility immediately following his sentencing.

Tommy Spina, James’ attorney, said his client is receptive to seeking help.

“It’s something that probably should have happened long before, and sometimes it takes an event such as this to get people to understand the extent of their problem,” Spina said Monday.

“(Treatment) was not something he was forced in to. It was something he recognized he had to do, and he willingly and voluntarily chose to do it.”

A native of Albany, Ga., James was selected by the San Diego Chargers in the fifth round of the 1984 NFL Draft. He played for the Chargers from 1984-1988. During the 1985 season, James set the NFL record for all-purpose yards.

James was inducted into the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame in 2006.
