The University of Montevallo collected more than 325 pounds of canned goods as part of its Cans Across America event last week.

The UM branch of Sodexo USA, an integrated food and facilities management company, invited the community to bring two canned goods to Anna Irvin Dining Hall on Nov. 12. In exchange, donors received a free lunch.

Hernan Gambertoglio, Sodexo marketing administrator at UM, said the university collected 180 pounds of canned goods last year. UM sought to double this year’s contribution after learning Cans Across America wanted to set the Guinness World Record for the most non-perishable food collected nationally in a 24-hour period.

“We are still waiting to find out if we set a new Guinness World Record across the nation,” Gambertoglio said.

The hefty donation was delivered to Shelby Emergency Assistance, where more donations are welcomed.
