A 48-year-old Alabaster woman faces charges with stealing more than $30,000 from the U.S. Veterans Administration.

Ramona Moore is accused of defrauding the VA out of $30,346. Federal prosecutors say Moore illegally cashed checks from the VA’s Retirement Survivor Insurance Program from Jan. 3, 2005 to March 1, 2007.

The two-count indictment was handled down Tuesday at U.S. District Court in Birmingham.

If convicted, Moore faces up to 10 years in prison and a $250,000 or both.

“This office will prosecute defrauders to the fullest extent of the law,” said U.S. Attorney Alice H. Martin, in a press release.

U.S. Secret Service agents investigated the case. Assistant U.S. Attorney Frank Salter will prosecute the case.
