Briarwood Christian defensive end Walker May is one of three finalists for the AHSAA Class 5A Lineman of the Year, selected by the Alabama Sports Writers Association.

May, a 6-foot-4, 210, senior led athletes in Shelby County with 13 sacks, while also adding 70 tackles for the Lions. He also had two blocked kicks, four forced fumbles and a recovered fumble for a touchdown among other key defensive stats.

“He’s fundamentally sound in everything he does. He can play all four positions on the defensive line and all three linebacker spots if we needed him,” Briarwood defensive line coach Shane Harmon said. “He’s a matchup nightmare for other teams.”

May is one of three finalists, going up against Erwin defensive end Leland Baker and Carver-Montgomery offensive lineman Brandon Moore.

May matched up against Moore in the second round of the playoffs, which Carver won 17-13.

Moore told reporters after the game that May was the best defender he’d seen all year.

“I definitely think Walker got the best of him in that game,” Harmon said. “I can’t imagine another kid having a bigger impact on a team than what he did for us this year. He turned a very average defense into a very good one.”

Harmon said May played every snap on special teams and missed only one snap on defense.

Winner of the award will be announced Thursday.
