UM names new police chief

Lynda Michele “Shelley” Tyree of Calera has been named police chief at the University of Montevallo.

Tyree has served the UM police department since 2000 and has been interim police chief since February.

Tyree has more than 12 years of law enforcement experience, according to a press release issued by the university. Since joining the department, Tyree has written and implemented new standard operating procedures, oversaw the installation of 13 cameras and four emergency code blue phones on campus and established bicycle and student patrol units.

In addition, Tyree is responsible for keycard access to academic buildings.

Tyree previously was a police officer for the city of Bessemer and Jacksonville State University. She also served as an agent/investigator for the Calhoun County District Attorney’s Office.
