Edgewood may have ended their high school careers in a Shelby Academy uniform during the AISA semifinal, but Brandon Horton and Jeremy Ikner suited up one more time last week.

The two Raider seniors helped lead the East team to a 43-25 victory over the West in the AISA All-Star game in Prattville on Thursday.

Ikner, who stood at 6-foot-6, 330 pounds when the season began, served as captain and started at left tackle on the East offensive line. He was used as the lead blocker to open up several holes through the game, especially on third down.

“He did a good job with some key blocks on some big time plays,” said Edgewood head coach Bobby Carr, who coached the East offense. “He moves a lot better than people think.”

Ikner rotated in every two series, and helped set up at least two rushing touchdowns, as the East jumped out to a 28-0 lead. They led 28-10 entering halftime.

Horton helped lead the defense with a handful of tackles in the secondary and an interception late in the game, which he returned 15 yards.

“He did real well. They (West) completed some passes, but our secondary delivered some serious licks,” said Lowndes Academy head coach Art Sullivan who helped coach the East defense.

Carr said he was disappointed that Shelby defensive end Bobby Sexton was unable to play after being selected for the game. Sexton missed the first round of the playoffs with a blood clot in his leg. His replacement for the All-Star game was found before doctors cleared him in time for the semifinal at Edgewood.

“He gave us fits when they played us that second time around,” Carr said. “I’m glad they’re all seniors, and we don’t have to face them next year.”
