JULY

BANK ROBBERS CAUGHT AFTER NATIONWIDE HUNT

U.S. Marshals captured two men wanted for robbing at least 12 banks in six states, including an M&F Bank in Hoover. The arrests followed a nationwide manhunt that involved U.S. Marshals, the FBI and several other agencies. Malik Rahmel Dillard, 25, and Zarqurous Lequis Sanders, 24, face charges of robbing a dozen banks across the country. The television show “America’s Most Wanted” featured the duo, dubbed the “Interstate Bandits.”

82 DOGS FOUND AT HOME IN CALERA

After responding to an animal complaint, police found 82 dogs at a home in the 2000 block of Highway 26 in Calera. The residence also doubled as a facility where dogs are taken in and adopted out. The facility differed from most animal control facilities because it had a no-kill policy, which means the animals are not euthanized, said Police Sgt. Angela Velarde. Twenty of the facility’s dogs were moved to the Shelby County Human Society after being examined and declared healthy.

AUGUST

FIVE MEN KILLED

Five men were found with their throats slashed at an Inverness apartment complex after a bad drug deal according to Sheriff Chris Curry. Police discovered five Hispanic men dead Aug. 20 at Cahaba Lakes apartments, off U.S. 280 behind Home Depot. The men’s throats were slashed and they were bound with tape. The killings were a murder for hire over drug money totaling more than $400,000, Curry said. Four suspects were arrested and charged with two counts of capital murder.
