When it comes to college recruiting some players just have it all and scholarship offers comes in drone from coaches, but some players often go unnoticed until late in the process.

That’s the story for former Spain Park guard Josh Magette.

Magette never impressed scouts with high flying dunks or flashy play during his career with the Jaguars, but he carried a resume of success and the heart of a champion throughout his tenure in the baby blue and white.

However, leading the Jags to the 6A Final Four in 2007, being named the Regional MVP, Shelby County Player of the Year and back-to-back Area MVP honors seemed to just be the tip of the iceberg.

His silent honors helped cultivate a dream that began in the seventh grade and land the left-handed guard in the Rocket City as a part of the University of Alabama-Huntsville Chargers.

“It can’t get any better right now,” Magette said. “It’s unbelievable.”

While Magette was receiving a lot of “walk on” talk or partial offers from coaches, he received a full athletic scholarship offer from UAH before his senior campaign. One of the schools talking academic offers was the University of Montevallo, who will host Magette and UAH on Thursday.

“I’ve circled this game since we got the schedule. Especially since this is the last year Montevallo will be in our conference, there is an extra incentive to win this game,” Magette said.

Magette, who currently averages just under 10 points per game and leads the team with 30 steals, has earned a starting role for the Chargers and enters the Montevallo game coming off a 22-point performance to down No. 18 Valdosta State University on Saturday.

“It has been surreal so far. From thinking I was redshirting to now starting, it has been unbelievable,” Magette said. “I love playing for coach (Lennie) Acuff. He has given me a lot of freedom so far which has been a plus. I think the system has been a great fit for me.”

Magette will look to do something Thursday that Charger guards have been unable to do since 2003 — beat Montevallo. UAH (9-5, 2-0 GSC) is 0-10 against Montevallo (8-9, 1-1 GSC) since Danny Young took over the UM program before the 2003-04 season. Magette is ready to display why he thinks the Chargers are a contender in the Gulf South Conference East Division when they tip-off against UM at 7:30 p.m. Thursday in the BankTrust Arena.

“I am really looking forward to be able to play in front of all of the people who saw me play in high school again. It will be a good opportunity for everyone to see what kind of team we have this year,” Magette said.
