Clarence O. Payne

Clarence O. Payne, age 66, from Childersburg, passed away Jan. 19, 2009, after battling small cell lung cancer for almost 15 months.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Nathan Payne; brothers, Allen Lewis Payne, Charles Ray Payne and William Jennings Payne; sisters, Virginia Elizabeth Payne and Juanita Payne.
Survivors include his wife of almost 45 years, Laura Adair Payne; daughter, Rhonda (John) McCormac of Chelsea; son, Mike (Heather) Payne of Chelsea; grandchildren, Laura Countess, Thomas Countess, Allyson Payne, Katherine Payne, Sarah McCormac and Mary Emily Payne; sisters, Mrs. Billie McDaniel of Sylacauga, Mrs. Charlotte Black of Goodwater and Mrs. Veliene Webster of Montgomery.
He was a member of First Baptist Church of Oak Grove, where he also served as a deacon.
Clarence grew up in Childersburg and retired from the paper mill, formerly known as Kimberly-Clark, after 35 years of service. He served for 18 years in the Alabama National Guard and was part owner of an accounting business.
He enjoyed serving at his church, traveling, camping, fishing, spending time with friends and spoiling his grandchildren and then sending them home.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the First Baptist Church of Oak Grove Sanctuary Renovation Fund.
Visitation was held Wednesday, Jan. 21, 2009, from 5-9 p.m. at Curtis and Son Funeral Home in Childersburg. Funeral services were held Thursday, Jan. 22, 2009, at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church of Oak Grove with a burial at Tallasahatchie Cemetery with the Rev. Max Buttram officating.
Pallbearers were George, Roy and Tom Adair, Thomas Countess, Robert Dillard, Mack Kilgore, Jason McDaniel and Mark Payne. Honorary pallbearers were Jesse Johnston, First Baptist Church of Oak Grove men’s Sunday school class and the First Baptist Church of Oak Grove Deacons.
