Spain Park’s Killer Bs enter sectionals

Spain Park is not expected to compete for a team wrestling championship next week, but four Jaguars look to take a shot for a medal.

The Killer Bs — brothers Bo and Reid Bishop and brothers Geoffrey and Tommy Bostany — lead Spain Park’s wrestling team week-by-week and will look to gain placement in the Class 6A state tournament with wins at the sectional tournament this weekend.

Leading the way is junior Geoffrey Bostany, who has only one loss on the season at 125 pounds.

“At first, I was kind of nervous going from 103 to 125, but I’ve made a pretty good adjustment,” said Geoffrey, who was undefeated until two weeks ago.

The sets of brothers raise the level of competition in practice, often competing against each other.

“Our competitiveness just feeds off each other,” Geoffrey said. “Tommy sees me working hard, so he wants to work hard, and Bo sees Reid working hard, and he wants to work hard.”

The Bishop brothers are often found wrestling each other at practice if Geoffrey and Reid are not going at it.

“Brothers can turn it to a whole new notch when you’re wrestling each other,” head wrestling coach Cody Merrill said.

Such matches allow Bo, a senior football player, a chance to see speed that he does not usually see, while Reid goes against strength that he’s not used to wrestling.

“I usually win though, since I have 20 pounds on him,” Bo said.

But as sectionals approach, the four leaders are hopeful that in the future they will be able to compete as a team at sectionals, something that is not much of an option now.

“We need more guys to come out for the team. Not having a full team kills us,” Bo said.

Spain Park forfeited 18 points to start every match this season, with forfeits at weight classes 119, 215 and heavyweight.

The Bostanys believe Spain Park will have a full team in the near future with a crop of Berry Middle School wrestlers feeding into the program next year.
