As a teenager, Sherri Simmers admired her parents’ love for the open road.

Mom and Dad each had their own motorcycle, and both craved the thrill of being at one with a two-wheeled machine. Simmers wanted to be just like them.

Simmers grew up to own a 2007 Harley-Davidson Softail Deluxe, and is the sole female sales associate at Heart of Dixie Harley-Davidson in Pelham. She says nothing compares to taking her “Hog” out on the asphalt.

“I can’t explain the freedom and confidence riding gives you,” Simmers said. “I want women to know they can ride just as well as a guy can.”

This Saturday, Harley-Davidson and LadyWorks Fitness will host “Women and Motorcycles,” a free event meant to raise awareness about motorcycles among women.

The event will be held from 9 a.m. to noon at LadyWorks Fitness, 2831 Pelham Pkwy.

Though the population of women riders is growing slowly but steadily, only about 12 percent of the motorcycle riding population is female, Simmers said. Some women decide to ride after overcoming a life obstacle like cancer or divorce, while others want to fulfill a secret dream. Whatever the reason, Simmers encourages all women to go “Hog” wild this weekend.

During the event, guests will hear from women riders about their Harley experience, and see the latest trends in motorcycle fashion. Guests will also learn about safety, maintenance and receive tips from the Riders Institute for Defensive Education.

Demonstration rides won’t be offered, however, guests will get a close look at Harleys tailored for women riders, Simmers said.
