Whenever Phil and Suzanne Hurst drove past a vacant bank building on Montevallo’s Main Street, they thought it would be the perfect place for a downtown art gallery.

The couple’s thought soon turned into action, and action turned into Blue Phrog Gallery, which had its grand opening and ribbon cutting Feb. 6. The Peter, Paul and Mary song “I’m In Love With A Big Blue Frog” – a favorite of Phil’s – inspired the gallery’s name.

Though the Hursts don’t have an extensive art background, both share an obvious passion for all things beautiful.

“I don’t have any talent for making it, but I have talent to show it,” Suzanne said.

The Hursts applied finishing touches to the gallery just hours before the grand opening. Blue Phrog features eclectic pieces from Alabama artists, including Teresa Wamble of Calera and Amos Sperry and Karen Stephenson, both of Alabaster. Pieces from University of Montevallo art students are also on display.

The Hursts say Blue Phrog has something to suit all artistic tastes. The gallery’s collection ranges from paintings and pottery to stained glass and iron art.

The couple seeks artists who “don’t have a place to show or don’t know they have the talent to show art,” Suzanne said. They hope to make Blue Phrog a haven for both veteran and budding artists.

The Hursts also hope to combine art and community by hosting outreach events to benefit Owens House and Children’s Hospital. Phil added that he wants to host a student art show featuring pieces from Montevallo elementary, middle and high school students.

The Hursts say opening Blue Phrog Gallery has been a challenging, but worthwhile learning experience. Both are proud to have followed through on their initial thought.

“It’s been a great endeavor and I’m glad we did it,” Suzanne said. “It’s really been a boost for our self-confidence to have a good support system in the community.”
