Cell phones safe from telemarketers

Our cell phone numbers are safe from telemarketers.

That’s the message from State Rep. Mike Hill, R-Shelby County, who responded recently to an email-generated rumor circulated to millions regarding personal cell phone numbers being released to telemarketing companies for sales calls.

That’s just not true, Hill said.

“This is important information that all consumers should be made aware of, and I just want to help dispel this email rumor for my constituents,” he said.

According to the Federal Trade Commission, cell phone numbers will not be released for telemarketing calls, Hill said.

However, he said you can still place your cell phone number on the National Do Not Call registry, and your number will remain on the registry permanently.

To have your cell number placed on the Do Not Call Registry, call 1-888-382-1222 (TTY 1-866-290-4236). The call has to be made from the telephone you wish to add to the registry.

Cell phone numbers may also be registered over the Internet by visiting www.donotcall.gov
