We live in uncertain times. The economic and political turmoil facing our country is frightening and causes many of us to yearn for peace.

Knowing of the challenges that lay waiting for them, Jesus taught his apostles about peace at the last supper.

“Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.” (John 14:27)

The peace of which Jesus spoke, is not the kind of peace that the world recognizes – physical safety or the absence of conflict. In fact, those apostles knew much of hardship and tribulation. However, the peace that the Savior promises is an internal and personal peace. It provides spiritual security and an anchor of hope.

He went on to teach, “These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world. (John 16:33)”

Trouble and tribulation are a part of this life and none can escape them –– not even the most devout follower of Christ. As Paul taught the Romans, tribulation has its purpose in our life.

“Tribulation worketh patience; and patience, experience; and experience, hope.” (Romans 5:3-4) But even though we must face personal trials, Christ’s promise of infinite and eternal peace resonates within us. As we accept His invitation to come unto Him and follow Him, we can gain a personal assurance of His power and love.

That peace “which passeth all understanding” (Philipians 4:7) will be a comfort and balm. It is a knowledge that all is well with regard to the matters of real importance. Yes, true and lasting peace, even in turbulent times, can be ours if we will but turn to the Prince of Peace, even Jesus Christ.
