Calera met its match Thursday, as the Ramsay Rams jumped out to a 9-2 lead at Alabama State University and never looked back, ending Calera’s season, 65-57.

“It’s disappointing. You feel like you have a good team, but at the same time when you get to the region tournament they’re all good teams,” Calera head coach Robert Burdette said.

The Eagles (26-5) pulled within two points numerous times in the second quarter, but trailed 35-29 at the half, struggling to change the tone of the game.

“We missed some easy shots early, turned it over and just weren’t able to turn them over defensively,” said Burdette. “They controlled the tempo of the game, and we were never able to create that up and down the floor play.”

Despite pulling with in two points, 37-35 early in the second half, Ramsay posted a 14-0 run over the next five minutes to pull away.

DeMarcus Dowdell helped Calera reduce the lead to four points, 59-55, with 1:35 to play with an assist to Julian Harris. Ramsay leading scorer Ralph Floyd answered with a basket of his own and hit 4-of-4 free throws down the stretch to secure the win. Ramsay was 13-of-17 from the line in the second half, while Calera was 15-of-29 for the game.

Ramsay (14-17) will meet either Midfield or Greensboro in the Class 4A Central Region final Saturday at 1:30 p.m.
