The Montevallo chapter of the Future Farmers of America will host its fifth-annual Farm Day Feb. 27-28 at Montevallo High School.

Keith Adair, FFA advisor, said this year’s Farm Day theme is “Farming in Action.” On Feb. 27, Farm Day will only host Montevallo Elementary School. Students will be the first to encounter ponies, donkeys, goats, sheep, chickens, pigs and cows at the event’s petting zoo, Adair said.

Other activities include cow milking at a mobile dairy, a visit with Smokey the Bear, and a half-hour play starring FFA members.

Adair said the play highlights the continued importance of traditional farming in today’s advanced world.

“It is a show that takes kids from the present way of living to the way things used to be,” Adair said. “The show talks about what we get from each animal and what we use from those animals today. Even though the world has changed, farming hasn’t changed.”

On Feb. 28, Farm Day will open to the general public from 9 a.m-4 p.m. Admission is free. An antique tractor parade through downtown Montevallo will kick off the festivities at 9 a.m., Adair said. The event will feature the petting zoo and mobile dairy, as well as games, vendors, a tractor show, a BBQ cook-off, a silent auction and live music.

“There’ll be four different bands from gospel to county to bluegrass all day. We have something for everyone,” Adair said.

Adair said all proceeds from Farm Day go towards scholarships for Montevallo High School seniors.

Since its founding in 2004, Farm Day has grown in size and popularity, Adair said. The FFA expects a healthy turnout for the event.

“Last year we saw 1,500 people come through, and it was cold last year,” Adair said. “This year, if we have a good day, we’re expecting 2,000 or better.”
