Pelham residents grappling with high costs of prescription drugs got some relief on Monday when city leaders announced the free distribution of prescription drug discount cards.

All Pelham residents regardless of age, income level or existing health coverage may use the cards, which are provided through a program sponsored by the National League of Cities in collaboration with CVS Caremark. The cards save an average of 20 percent on prescription drugs.

The cards are now available at local pharmacies and schools, as well as Pelham’s city hall, library, municipal court and civic complex. The cards will be accepted at 25 pharmacies throughout Pelham, and more than 59,000 pharmacies nationwide.

In a news release, City Councilmember Karyl Rice said residents can use the card whenever insurance does not cover their prescriptions. Rice encourages residents to seize the money-saving opportunity, saying the card does not carry any membership or enrollment fees.

“In the current economic climate, where many people are watching what they spend, Pelham is happy to partner with the National League of Cities to make this prescription discount card available for our residents,” Rice said. “Whether or not an individual has prescription coverage, this program can make it easier for our residents to afford the drugs they need to deal with short-term illness or stay healthy by managing a chronic condition.”
