Jokes, small talk and even bid raising can be heard throughout the Westover Town Hall at 10 a.m.

Each Wednesday, senior citizens from Westover and surrounding communities come to chat, play games and eat.

“It helps break up the week and gives me a chance to mix and mingle with other people,” said Faye Grimes, who is one of 15 ladies who come to socialize each week.

Annette Tyler, volunteer director of the Westover Senior Center, said the center was created as an extension of the new library in 2005.

“We started out meeting once a month, and at some point, we thought we should move it to every week,” Tyler said.

The center offers an array of programs, from knitting classes to bridge classes, to apron decorating and wreath making.

“We do different arts and crafts and just do what they are interested in doing,” Tyler said. “We do the things that age can do. We range from 93 years old all the way back down to 60-something. We just try to find something for them to do to keep them entertained.”

Most seniors attending say it is a way to make friends and to get out of the house each week.

“I enjoy getting out and seeing something different — to see the scenery,” said Wini Hendrick, a resident of Ridge View at Meadow Brook Assisted Living.

Inez Lee has been attending the senior center for about a year and a half. She started attending after moving back in with her daughter.

“She insisted on me coming here,” Lee said. “She said, ‘Mother, you need to get out of the house.’ I have thoroughly enjoyed it.”

The center’s accessibility also has made it nice for many seniors from the area.

“We have a large population of seniors, and I just thought that it would be something for them to do,” Tyler said. “It would be close by … They seem to be happy with it.”
