UM baseball splits with Urbana

The No. 30 University of Montevallo baseball team (14-6-1) split a mid-week series with Urbana University (5-6), 13-16, 11-5. The Falcons were led by junior Andy Revell, who went 6-for-7 in the series with a pair of doubles, three runs scored, two steals and four RBIs. Freshman Brett Roney went 4-for-8 with four RBIs, three runs scored and a stolen base as well.

Junior John Michael Caraway picked up his second win of the season as he pitched four innings while striking out three and walking just one.

In game one Tuesday, the Falcons fell 16-13 despite leading all the way until the ninth inning. The Blue Knights scored seven runs in the top of the ninth to take the 16-13 win. Revell was 3-for-4 with two RBIs and a double while senior Ryan Norman also went 3-for-4 with a home run and two RBIs. Freshman Joe Handley went 2-for-3 with a double and a team-high three RBIs in the game as well.

Daugherty and junior Chris Sosebee each picked up a pair of hits and an RBI.

On the mound junior Taylor Edwards took the loss pitching the final two-thirds of an inning while giving up four hits and seven runs. Freshman Mitch Holcombe got the start going four innings with five strikeouts and no walks.

In the second game, played Wednesday, the Falcons jumped out to an early 1-0 lead but the Blue Knights responded with three runs in the second. The Falcons then went on to score 10 runs over the fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh innings.

Revell went 3-for-3 with a double and two RBIs while Roney was 3-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Senior Jeremy Jones also picked up a pair of hits with a double and an RBI.

Caraway got the start and the win while junior Heath Tapscott, freshman Matthew Rickels, formerly of Spain Park, and freshman Wes Rich, formerly of Pelham, combined in relief to strike out five and walk just two.

The Falcons return to action Saturday at 1 p.m. as they host No. 18 Ouachita Baptist University.
