Brown wins SCS opening race

J.R. Brown scored his first win of the season Saturday night, charging through the field from last to first in the Shelby County Speedway’s 12-lap season-opener.

Brown’s No. 12 car suffered valve train issues early in the night, causing him to miss his heat race. The incident left him starting last for the feature event.

“It took us about 30 to 45 minutes to make the repair,” Brown said. “During intermission I made a few laps and I knew then that it was going to be very competitive.”

But he wasn’t the only competitive car in the field. Wade Carlee, No. 84 who also started in the back of the field, quickly made his way to the front as well. Brown took the lead on lap four and had a lead of approximately four seconds on Carlee. Carlee caused a caution and was placed in the rear of the field, but regained his second placed position within a few laps.

“It was a show from there,” Brown said. “I’ve watched Carlee for years and I know he likes to enter the turns on the bottom and comes out high like a rocket. I knew I had to stay low to beat him.”

The win marked Brown’s third victory at SCS – the last one being July 21 of last year. Brown has competed in one other race this season, finishing 13th in the Winter Bash at Whynot Motorsports Park in Meridian, Miss.
