Freshmen lead BCS track at Mtn. Brook

Freshmen Ben Parks and Kalan Reed led Briarwood Christian School with individual first-place finishes at the Five Team Battle Royale track meet Wednesday.

Parks won the 80-meter hurdles with a time of 12.02 seconds and Reed took the triple jump with a distance of 40 feet to help BCS finish third in the boys’ competition. The pair also ran the 200-meter hurdles, with Reed finishing in second, .42 behind Mountain Brook’s Ryan Litchenstein, and Parks was close behind in third. Reed was third in the 80-meter hurdles. Combined, the two earned 30 of Briarwood’s 45 points in the meet.

Senior Andrew Darwin was second in the 2,000-meter run to earn six points for the Lions, while Adam Richie had a point for finishing sixth in the high jump. Briarwood also picked up four points in each the 4×100-meter relay and 4×300-meter relay, finishing third and fourth, respectively.

Host-team Mountain Brook with 144 points, followed by Homewood with 96 points. Briarwood had 45 points as a team, followed closely by Hewitt-Trussville’s 42 points. Montgomery Academy was the fifth team at the meet and had 14 points.

In the girls’ meet, Briarwood took home fifth place with a total of nine points. Danielle Castille led the girls with a second-place finish and six points in the 80-meter hurdles, followed by teammate Elizabeth Snyder in fourth place and two points. Varina Hart received a point for a fifth-place finish in the 500-meter dash.
