Oak Mountain girls’ basketball head coach Donald Clayton has been named the school’s athletic director.

Clayton fills the vacancy left by Jerry Hood who resigned as head football coach in early November and later resigned as athletic director.

“I want to try my hand at the administration level and see if that’s a path I want to go,” Clayton said.

He said he’s developed a loyalty to Oak Mountain over the past seven years as a coach and teacher, and believes he can provide a big service to the school.

Previously, Clayton was serving as associate AD, coaching girls’ basketball and teaching four history classes. He will remain on as girls’ basketball coach and will continue to teach, but is unsure how many classes that will be. Jeff Harris, the new football head coach, will serve as associate athletic director.

Clayton, a native of Montevallo, is recently married to the Oak Mountain girls’ soccer coach, formerly Kelly Christoffer.

Hood will start a new position April 1 as the athletic director and head football coach at Clay-Chalkville High School.
