It’s a record not many expected and not many will have a chance to match. Cornerstone Christian School’s softball wins streak came to an end Saturday at 67 games, losing at Ashford, 2-0.

“After 67 games, it hurts to lose,” CCS head coach Mark Armstrong said. “It’s gonna make us refocus.”

CCS and Ashford were scoreless through three-and-a-half innings Saturday, before Allison Galle drove in two runs on a two-out bloop single for Ashford. It was one of four hits allowed by Cornerstone ace pitcher Chelsey Dunnaway, who struck out nine in the five-inning game. However, CCS managed to get only three hits in the game, none of which came in the same inning.

“Give the credit to Ashford. They were ready to play and played a great game,” Armstrong said. “We just weren’t ready to play, and that’s my fault.”

Armstrong said he never saw his team in position to win 67 games straight. The most in the state by previous softball teams was 40 in 2005 and 1997 by Vestavia and Hoover, respectively.

But despite the loss, Armstrong said his players are not quitters and plans to use the loss as a way to build for their third Class 1A softball championship and next meeting with Ashford.

“It’ll make us ratchet up the intensity a bit in all phases,” Armstrong said. “I promise you it’ll be a good game.”

CCS (16-1) bounced back to beat East Memorial, 16-0, in Prattville Monday.
