Thieves damage Pelham jewelry store

Thieves caused $50,000 worth of damage to a Pelham jewelry store early Saturday morning, but stole no jewelry.

Three men wearing ski masks broke into Paul’s Diamond Center around midnight by cutting a hole in the roof, said owner Paul Petro. The thieves also tore out the store’s alarm system and telephone lines, and attempted to open a safe using blow torches and jack hammers.

Petro said the thieves fled after an outdoor maintenance worker spotted them inside the building.

“They ran out of here and left all their torches and jack hammers behind,” Petro said. “I have a video of the whole thing.”

Petro has filed a report with the Pelham Police Department. No arrests have been made.

A Pelham police officer stood guard at the store while repairs were made over the weekend. Monday was business as usual.

The thieves could have stolen up to $1 million worth of merchandise, but Petro has managed to find humor in the situation.

“It was kind of funny to look up and see a hole in your roof,” he said. “I figured I had a new skylight.”

Paul’s Diamond Center is located at 3582 Pelham Pkwy.
