Ben Bracewell and David Woods clinched a spot in the playoffs for Briarwood Monday with combined no-hit victory over John Carroll, 10-0.

Bracewell (7-0) started the game on a strict pitch count but went four innings, striking out seven and allowing two walks. Woods closed the game, allowing one walk and striking out one. For the second-straight game, Bracewell also helped out with his bat, going 3-for-3 from the plate with two RBIs, a double and two runs scored. Paul McKelvey, Jonathan Logan and Evan Simmons each had two hits, with an RBI for both McKelvey and Simmons.

Briarwood (15-3, 4-0) clinches a spot in the playoffs, as John Carroll and Shelby County have more than two Class 5A, Area 8 loses and the Lions have only two games remaining.

Briarwood hosts Shelby County Thursday.

-CHELSEA 13, SHELBY CO. 2: Chelsea took advantage of two Shelby County errors and pounded out 10 hits, including two home runs, to defeat the Wildcats, 13 – 2, in Class 5A, Area 8 play Monday. Kevin McNorton took the loss for the Wildcats, pitching two innings and giving up four hits and six runs. Getting hits for the Wildcats were McNorton and Jon Walden. Blake Yance collected the win for the Hornets, pitching three innings and striking out eight and giving up one hit. John Calhoun led the Hornets knocking in four runs on three hits, including a two-run homer. Zac Hilliard also homered for Chelsea with a three-run shot. Shelby County will travel to Briarwood on Thursday and Chelsea will take on John Carroll. Both will be doubleheaders starting at 4:30 p.m. Chelsea can clinch a playoff spot with a win Thursday.

-SHADES MTN. 10, VINCENT 5: Brett Frizzell had two hits and two RBIs for Vincent, but the Jackets were unable to bounce back from a four-run fourth inning by Shades Mountain that turned a 3-1 game into a 7-1 lead.

SOFTBALL RESULTS

-BRIARWOOD 2, MONTEVALLO 1: Madeline Lamon picked up the win for the Briarwood Lions (9-1), striking out 10 and allowing three hits and three walks. Laci Hochstrasser allowed only two hits for Montevallo and struck out 12. Caroline Seay had an RBI for Briarwood, while Shelby Romanstine had Montevallo’s run.

-ERWIN 10, INDIAN SPRINGS 4: Indian Springs scored four runs in the third inning, but was unable to overcome an early 8-0 deficit.

-PELL CITY 5, SPAIN PARK 4: Spain Park rallied from a 5-0 deficit to score three in the bottom of the sixth and one in the seventh but fell short of the comeback as Pell City improved to 21-2. Hannah Camp and Maria Gulas both has a pair of hits for Spain Park.

-CALERA 4, JEMISON 3: Jocelyn Davis drove in Katelyn Dean for the winning run Monday, as Calera downed Jemison in an area game. Dean had two hits in the game, including a seventh-inning double. Calera took a 2-0 lead in the first and added a run in the second, before Jemison forced the game even, 3-3, in the third. Savannah Burleson struck out six and gave up two hits for the win.

BOYS’ SOCCER

OAK MTN. 8, GARDENDALE 1: Thomas Holloway led Oak Mountain with two goals, as the Eagles jumped to a 6-0 lead. Chandler Hoffman scored his 102nd career goal in the 7th minute off an assist from Donnie Maciel to put the Eagles on the board, 1-0. Mason Lavallett, Daniel Wolfe, Zach Rodivich, William Glass and Michael Peden each scored a goal. Brenton Thompson faced only three shots on goal for Oak Mountain and stopped two of them.
