Vansant named GSAC Player of Week

Huntingdon College senior catcher Dane Vansant of Columbiana was named the Great South Athletic Conference baseball Player of the Week April 1.

Vansant batted .526 for the week ending March 29, going 5-for-9 at the plate in three games.

Against Greensboro College March 23, Vansant was 3-for-3 with a walk, double and two RBIs, as the Hawks won the first game of a double-header, 10-5. Huntingdon took the night cap, 7-2, but Vansant did not play.

On March 30, Huntingdon was swept by Piedmont College in a doubleheader, as Vansant led the Hawks in the first game with a double. His two-run home run the next day, helped lead Huntingdon to a 5-0 win over Piedmont to close the opening GSAC series of the season. His slugging percentage for the week was 1.111. For the season, Vansant is hitting .325 with 10 RBIs. He is the son of Dana and Jackie Vansant.

Hawks’ pitcher Alex Sanford of Prattville was named Co-Pitcher of the Week with Spencer Shelton of Piedmont College.

Sanford went 2-0 with a 0.61 ERA last week. He threw a complete-game shutout against Piedmont march 30, striking out a career-high 12 batters. Sanford allowed one earned run in 5 and two-thirds innings to get the win against Greensboro. For the season, Sanford is 4-1 with a 2.55 ERA.

Huntingdon (16-10, 1-2) will host Maryville College (15-12, 2-1) for a GSAC series April 3-5.
