Supporting cancer cure our priority

There are several indicators that spring is upon us here in Shelby County. Azaleas begin to bloom (perhaps a bit too soon for this week’s cold snap), ball parks bustle with activity and Relay for Life signs begin to pop up at homes and businesses across our area.

All are certain signs that our community is beginning to wake from the winter doldrums, but the Relay for Life signs and the hours of effort to eradicate cancer are unique to Shelby County. I’m not suggesting that other communities don’t roll up their sleeves to support Relay for Life in their area, but it seems none do so with quite the spirit or results of Shelby County.

Selfless volunteers across our community raise substantial sums of money to fund cancer research each year; it is an effort that amazes so many and touches even more.

We all have no doubt been touched by cancer, either as a survivor or through the battle fought by a friend or loved one. We know the anguish faced and the tears shed.

The news of a cancer diagnosis, although terrifying, is no longer the death sentence it once was thanks to money raised by so many in countless communities.

However, there are still far too many of us who lose the fight with this dreaded disease, and so our work to fund cancer research must go on.

That’s where you and I can play a part by supporting Relay for Life.

Contributions large and small will make a difference. Teams and volunteers will make a difference. You can make a difference.

Relay for Life events are scheduled over the coming several weeks in communities throughout Shelby County.
