The Calera City Council has scheduled a work session Thursday, April 9 at 6:30 p.m. at City Hall to talk with its attorneys about a future meeting with the U.S. Justice Department regarding the dismissal of the city’s 2008 election results.

District Two Councilman Ernest Montgomery requested the work session during Monday’s city council meeting. Montgomery wants city officials and the general public to have a better understanding of attorneys’ plans for the meeting with Justice Department officials.

A delegation of Calera officials and attorneys will travel to Washington, D.C. in the next few weeks in an effort to get the city’s election results certified.

The Justice Department rejected the city’s 2008 redistricting plan for a second time last month, alleging the plan eliminates the city’s only African-American voting district.

The work session is open to the public.
