The United Methodist Women of Camp Branch United Methodist Church hope the first succulent strawberries of the season draw people to their farmer’s market April 18.

“It really has brought the community together,” Benson said of the annual market. “We enjoy getting out there and chatting with community members.”

Local cooks can also show off their skills with a Strawberry Cooking Contest.

Winners receive cash prizes for original recipes created from fresh or frozen strawberries. Entries will be accepted from 9 a.m.-10 a.m. and judged at 10 a.m.

Vendors plan to gather at the Camp Branch Farmers Market every two weeks with their merchandise. The produce and crafts included at the market increased over last year from four vendors to about 10. The event now includes farm-fresh eggs, goats milk products, local honey and soy candles.

“It provides you with fresh produce and allows you to know where your food comes from,” Benson said. “Most of the time you can even talk to the actual farmer who grew the vegetables.”

Benson said organizers want to bring in even a greater variety. They’re seeking out someone who creates wooden swings or chairs and people with exotic fruits and vegetables.

Master gardeners also set up at the markets to offer educational information for people looking to grow their own gardens.

All of the proceeds gained from vendor fees help the United Methodist Women at Camp Branch fund three separate missions. The money supports Family Connection locally, the Children’s Home of Alabama and the Ixiamas Boarding House in Guatemala.
