Parrot Heads party for charity

Rather than waste away in Margaritaville, fans of singer Jimmy Buffett will waste away at Pelham’s Margarita Grill on May 30 to raise money for Alzheimer’s of Central Alabama.

“Wastin’ Away in Margaritaham,” the sixth-annual beach party hosted by the Magic City Parrot Head Club, starts at noon and lasts until “the restaurant kicks us out,” said president Kay Moore. Admission is $10 in advance, $15 at the door. Dress is beach casual.

“We like the idea of partying with a purpose,” Moore said. “When we party, we’re gonna help somebody.”

A silent auction will be held during the party. Auction items include restaurant certificates, local art and beach accessories, Moore said. Music will be provided by Atlanta band A1A, the first of the Jimmy Buffett Tribute Bands.

The Parrot Heads — a term of endearment for Buffett fans — host at least four community service projects each year. The group completed its first project of 2009 last month, donating approximately 700 pounds of pet food, toys and supplies to The Emergency Animal Rescue Service in Hueytown, Moore said.

Last year, the Parrot Heads donated more than 1,000 food items to Shelby County Emergency Assistance. The group also donated 100 toys valued at $1,000 to the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office Angel Tree Kids program last Christmas.

Moore said the Parrot Heads raised $8,500 for Alzheimer’s of Central Alabama at last year’s beach party. They support Alzheimer’s education and research because of Buffett’s experience with the disease.

“Jimmy Buffett’s dad died from Alzheimer’s,” Moore said. “We always vote on what cause we want to support every year, and it always goes to Alzheimer’s.”

Moore invites potential Parrot Heads to the beach party as well as the group’s monthly meetings or “phlockings,” which are held the fourth Sunday of each month at 4 p.m. at Margarita Grill. The next phlocking is April 26.

“Sometimes you just need an escape from reality and we’re a good way to do that,” Moore said. “Listen to music, relax and think about more pleasant things.”
