Calera jumped on the Corner Yellowjackets in the first game of the Class 4A baseball playoffs Friday, pounding out 24 hits on its way to a 18-7 victory, but the Jackets responded with a 10-5 win to force a third game Saturday at 1 p.m.

Jeremy Hyde and Trent Posey led the way for the Eagles in the first game, combining for five hits, and driving in four runs each, two of which came off a home run by Hyde in the fifth. The Eagles scored nine runs in the fourth and fifth combined to bust the game open.

Scotty Reneau took the win for Calera, while Zac Isbell closed in relief. Combined, the two allowed seven runs off six hits and 11 walks.

In the second game, Corner pitcher Jake Eiland silenced the Eagles, going 4-for-5 from the plate and holding down Calera’s offense.

JR Posey had one hit and two RBIs for the Eagles in the second game and Nathan Smith helped lead the Eagles offensively.

“Their pitcher went out and did a good job in the second game, but it wasn’t anything we couldn’t finish. Today we’ve got to go out there and finish it,” Calera head coach Stephen Floyd said Saturday morning. “Mechanically we don’t have anything to work on. We played a sound game of baseball and lost. A lot will be told of this game today as far as how we can bounce back from yesterday.”

Chris Anderson will get the start on the mound for the Eagles in game three.
