Shelby County’s first Boys and Girls Club has met its 50-member cap for the 2009 summer season.

Freda Shivers, chair of Montevallo’s Boys and Girls Club steering committee, said a waiting list has been started for those still interested in the summer program beginning June 1 from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Orr Park Recreation Center. The program ends Aug. 12.

A long line of parents waited patiently outside Parnell Memorial Library this past Saturday to register their children, which was a pleasant surprise to Shivers.

“The lady who was first in line arrived at 5:45 a.m. for the 10:30 start of the registration process.” Shivers said. “She was smiling when I arrived at 9:30 and again at 10:30 when the door opened.”

The Boys and Girls Club of Central Alabama approved the Montevallo location as its ninth unit last month. The recreation center will undergo a few alterations before the club opens, according to Montevallo Mayor Ben McCrory.
