A Montgomery-based architectural and design firm is asking Pelham residents to weigh in on beautifying their city.

A team of architects from Goodwyn, Mills and Cawood will host public meetings called design “charrettes” June 9-10, said Councilwoman Teresa Nichols. Times and locations have not been set.

The city council allocated $15,000 to the firm for a development and design plan at their April 6 meeting. Nichols said the council wants to revamp Pelham’s three major roadways – U.S. Highway 31 and Alabama Highways 119 and 52 — with sidewalks, bike trails and walking trails.

“We hope to give our major arterials a personality and look for ways to connect our different areas in town,” said Nichols, adding the project is an extension of the city’s 2000 comprehensive master plan.

Nichols said the architects will gather data and collect maps to present at the June meetings. The architects will afterwards draw up preliminary plans that will be made public.

Final plans are scheduled to be complete by July. Nichols said the council wants to pay for the project in phases with money received from grants.
