Local Elvis fans can cancel that trip to Graceland. The King will make an appearance at the Elvis Silent Auction and Gala May 12, hosted by the South Shelby Chamber of Commerce.

Mark Elmore, a Hueytown Elvis impersonator, will perform and serve as emcee of the auction, to be held at Catfish Landing in Chelsea. Admittance is $5 at the door, which includes hors d’oeuvres and a cash bar. The event begins at 6 p.m. The auction will close at 8 p.m.

Chamber Director Stacy Walkup said the event’s theme is intended to reflect the goal: raising money for student scholarships.

“We wanted to bring it back to a high school feel, and that’s why we wanted it to be Elvis,” Walkup said.

The Elvis theme will continue through the night, with some of the King’s best music and a taste of his favorite foods, such as fried peanut butter and banana sandwiches.

The event will raise scholarship money for students from Chelsea High School, Shelby County High School, Vincent High School, Coosa Valley Academy, Cornerstone Christian School and the School of Technology, as well as for the Miss Shelby County pageant.

Chamber members have donated items for auction, such as artwork, rounds of golf at FarmLinks and restaurant and hotel gift certificates.

Last year’s silent auction brought in about 100 people and $6,000 for scholarships, both tallies that Walkup believes can increase this year.

“Our goal has been to beat out last year,” she said.
