University of Montevallo leading hitters Ryan Norman and Duston Daugherty, both formerly of Hoover High, were named to the All-Gulf South Conference First Team Thursday. Daugherty was also named the GSC Freshman of the Year.
Daugherty becomes the second player in school history to be named GSC Freshman of the Year as Brantly Clay received the honor in 2005. Daugherty led the Falcons in hit by pitch (11), stolen bases (15), steal attempts (17) and total plate appearances (200). He was also third in the GSC in sacrifice hits with 10. He had a .329 batting average and spent most of the year in the lead-off role for the Falcons.
Norman, a senior, cracks into the All-GSC East Division squad for the first time in his career. He led the team with a .412 batting average, seven home runs and a .618 slugging percentage. He struck out the fewest times (21) of players with more than 100 at bats and had an on-base percentage of .506. He had 245 putouts. Norman led the GSC in runners caught stealing with 28. He also went on a 17-game hit streak midway through the season to lead the Falcons.
