CCS drops first title series game

Abbeville Christian stacked three strong offensive innings together to down Cornerstone Christian, 14-4, in the first game of the AISA Class 1A best-of-three state championship series Tuesday.

The Generals scored their first run in the third inning with a bases-loaded wild pitch by Cornerstone pitcher Lance Benton to score C. Herring. C. White followed with a two-run single, and the floodgates were open.

After a four-run fourth inning gave Abbeville n 8-0 lead, Cornerstone began a rally in the top of the fifth with a one-out double by Cory Woodall. Trey Benson reached on a bases-loaded error to score the first Charger run, while Josh Dunnaway and Pokey Reece each collected base hits to score a run. The Chargers’ fourth run came on a bases-loaded walk by Nick Standridge.

Abbeville’s Dillon Wilson went the distance, striking out only one Charger batter, but the Chargers collected six hits and five guys on base.

Game two of the best-of-three series will be 10 a.m. Wednesday.
