Doris Lucas Wambeke, 78, died Friday, May 8, 2009, in Atlanta.
She is survived by her son, Alyn; her daughter, Jennifer Porter, and Jennifer’s husband, Richard; and a grandchild, Caryline Grace Porter; five nieces and three nephews; and a sister-in-law and brother-in-law in California.
Doris and Gene Wambeke, high school sweethearts, were married in Calera and resided in Birmingham in their early years together.
Huntsville’s growth from a sleepy cotton town to a center of the Space Age offered employment opportunities in 1956, and they built a home and long-term careers there, working for NASA and the U.S. Army at the Marshall Space Flight Center.
In their 52-year marriage, Doris and Gene raised two talented children, gardened, traveled and participated in church and voter registration activities.
After Gene’s passing in 2006, Doris moved to the Atlanta area to be close to her family, and was a member of First Baptist Church Alpharetta.
A graveside service will take place Saturday, May 16, 2009 at 2 p.m. at Enon Baptist Church Cemetery in Montevallo with a memorial service at Huntsville’s Southside Baptist Church on Saturday, June 6 at 2 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family gratefully requests you consider tax-deductible memorial gifts to Hospice Atlanta (6610 Bay Circle, Ste C, Norcross, GA 30071, 404-869-3000) or TIME, an evangelistic training mission, (3077 Leeman Ferry Road, Ste A4, Huntsville, AL 35801).
