Find courage to stand for goodness

In Philipians 4:8 it reads, “Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true … whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.”

Let’s take a moment to think on just one of these things: virtue. What is virtue? Does it still exist in our world today?

How can we lead more virtuous lives? All of these are very important questions and things to ponder.

Virtue has many definitions, all coming back to a standard of goodness, morality and chastity.

Perhaps we should simplify the definition to simply being a moral compass that guides our lives and enables us to make a stand for goodness.

A Japanese proverb says, “virtue is not knowing but doing.” This is where having the courage to take a stand enters our lives.

In today’s world it may seem that virtue has taken a back seat to “doing what feels good” and “fitting in.” These are indeed difficult days, but the need to be virtuous, to take a stand, is more important than ever before. We are constantly bombarded by temptations to participate in unrighteous activities.

Is virtue unimportant?

No! Virtue is what will help safeguard each of us and our families. We must teach them the things that are of most worth and value. We must constantly be on guard to watch for those who would corrupt little by little and destroy that which we should esteem most above all else: our virtue.

Living a virtuous life is difficult in today’s society. One who chooses to do so is often viewed as being old fashioned. Yet we must.

We can be virtuous by choosing to keep the commandments; repenting; and constantly seeking those things and activities which are honest, pure, good and praiseworthy.

We must be willing to take a stand to show that virtue is not a lost trait, and that it is truly the way to bring peace and happiness into the world.
