Briarwood’s first appearance in a softball state tournament was short-lived Friday, as the Lions lost to eventual state runner-up Cullman, 6-0, and Spanish Fort, 1-0.

Abbie Knight tossed a one-hit shutout and struck out six to lead Cullman, while Lauren Parks was the only Lion to collect a hit. Briarwood pitcher Madeline Lamon gave up two home runs in a three-run first inning and three more runs in the second, but held Cullman scoreless for the remainder of the game.

Lamon (18-11) pitched the complete game and gave up only three hits the last five innings and struck out five in the game.

She also went the distance in a pitchers’ duel against Spanish Fort Friday night in the losers’ bracket.

Spanish Fort right hander Morgan Druhan struck out 17 batters, while tossing a complete game one-hitter. Morgan Reed was the only Lion to get a hit. Druhan started the game by striking out the first nine Lions she faced.

The game was scoreless in the seventh, but Spanish Fort’s Lauren Vaughn scored the winning run on an error in right field on a single by Taylor Nail.

Cullman went on to finish as the Class 5A runner-up, losing to Mortimer Jordan, 11-4, in Saturday’s state championship game.
