Rogers’ photography on exhibit

“In all of these photos, I have tried to capture the beauty of the things I love,” said Judy Rogers in describing the current exhibit of her photography in Montevallo’s Parnell Memorial Library. “One of my greatest passions is the wonder and beauty of God’s creation; flowers, birds, sunsets, mountains, the ocean, trees, and little things you might miss if you didn’t look carefully.”

Rogers nature photography will remain on display in the gallery until June 26. It can be viewed during regular library hours.

Rogers is a native of Louisville, Ky., and has lived in Brierfield for many years. She is a retired professor of psychology at the University of Montevallo and is well–known for her love of nature. She is an active member of several organizations dedicated to environmental concerns.

Although her mother and sister were artists, the young Rogers showed no ability to draw or paint. She has, however, always been interested in photography, but it was only after retiring and travelling extensively that she began taking more pictures of beautiful plants and interesting vistas. Her sister convinced her that those photos revealed real artistic talent; that they were certainly good enough to display and perhaps to sell.

Rogers does not photograph nature exclusively, but she said nature is a dominant theme. She looks for and photographs interesting patterns and small details one often overlooks. She takes pictures of her four cats and a favorite dog, as well as the scenes from her travels. The conventional pictures of a person or groups standing in front of a scene do not particularly appeal to her except to record they were there.

“Photographing nature is important to me because it allows me to focus on and show my appreciation of the beauty of God’s creation,” commented Rogers. “Hopefully, others viewing theses photos, will see this beauty and come to appreciate it more.”

The exhibit is sponsored by the Montevallo Arts Council and was arranged by Becky Cox-Rodgers of the Parnell Memorial Library Foundation. Prints are available by contacting the photographer at judyrogers@att.net.

The gallery features exhibits throughout the year. These include works by local artists, traveling exhibits, and an annual display of creations by artists participating in the Montevallo Arts Fest.
