Pelham High School golfer Jake Dishman signed an athletic and academic scholarship Monday to play collegiate golf at the University of Mobile.

Dishman, who once preferred to play football and baseball, took up golf after a broken ankle in the eighth grade ended his careers in the other sports.

“I picked up golf, because it was the closest thing I could do to baseball,” Dishman said. “I really wasn’t that great at golf my freshman year going into it, but something clicked that year, and I ended up finishing up the year pretty well.”

Dishman ended his freshman year by advancing to the AHSAA Class 6A tournament at Magnolia Grove in Mobile. He won a playoff at his home course, Ballantrae, to get there — his most memorable moment in his high school career. He closed his high school career by winning the Shelby County Championship earlier this year.

Dishman, who plans to major in business and possibly minor in marine biology, now hopes to be one of the Top five golfers at UM.

“They told me that they want me to be able to play in the Top 5 next year,” Dishman said. “Hopefully I can have just as much, if not more, success that I’ve had at high school.”
