Warren C. Hamby Sr.

The Rev. Dr. Warren C. Hamby, Sr., died Tuesday, June 9, 2009. After a private burial, the family will have a memorial service at First Methodist Church, Sylacauga, Ala. on Friday, June 12, 2009, at 1 p.m.
Dr. Hamby was 84 years old. He was a Navy veteran of World War II. He held four degrees from three colleges and universities, the last of which was a Doctor of Ministry from Emory University. He served more than fifty years of ministry, most of which was with the North Alabama Conference of the United Methodist Church, including four years in the Mississippi Conference and ten years with the General Board of Global Ministries. He was author of two books, “Eight Keys to Happiness” and “Winds of Change.”
The United Methodist churches he served were Graysville, Midway-Docena, Mulga-Oak Grove, Sulligent, Alberta City in Tuscaloosa, Harselle First, Trinity in Huntsville, Galloway Memorial in Jackson, Miss., and Huffman in Birmingham. His ministry also included five years as Superintendant of the Florence District and ten years with the Office of Finance and Field Service, General Board of Global Ministries. The Rev. Hamby always stood and spoke for what was right, often at great personal sacrifice.
He is survived by his wife of sixty-one years, Mary Farr Stone Hamby; four children, Warren Jr. of Alabaster, Mrs. Frank Adkins (Barbara) of Harpersville, Mrs. Ed Piper (Jan) of Bartow, Fla., and Michael of Childersburg; three grandsons, Chan Stone of Birmingham, Drew Piper of Auburn and Lee Hamby of Alabaster.
In lieu of flowers, gifts may be sent to Sylacauga First United Methodist Church or any of the churches previously served by Dr. Hamby.
Curtis and Son Funeral Home Childersburg Chapel will direct the service.
